Employee Handbook

Employee Handbook

The Employee Handbook is designed to give employees as much helpful summary information as is reasonably practicable to assist in their understanding the practical, day to day aspects of working for the Company and the Company’s policies and procedures. It cannot, and does not cover every eventuality; rather it points employees to management for further information where necessary. However, for the most common employment situations it provides ample information.

The employee handbook is not intended to be contractually binding. The terms given in individual contractual letters or in Statements of Terms and Conditions of Employment or in Employment Contracts override any statements (whether contradictory or otherwise) in the handbook. The handbook clearly states that it is not contractual, thus allowing employers to changes its contents when necessary.

It is very important that employers ensure that employees have ready access to the employee handbook. This can be done either by giving each employee an individual copy, or by placing a copy of the employee handbook in an accessible location in every place of work, for example, the staff canteen, company vehicles, staff room etc.

The employee handbook is written in a reader-friendly style, not in legal language as it is designed to ensure that ALL employees can clearly understand your expectations of, and obligations to them. As said above, on occasions you may need to give more detailed information to an employee. For example, if an employee is the subject of a disciplinary process you should provide them with a full copy of the Company’s Disciplinary and Dismissal Policy and Procedure, or if an employee becomes pregnant, they should be given a copy of the Company’s Maternity Policy and Procedure.
