Parental Leave Policy and Procedure
Certain employees are entitled to take parental leave of up to 13 weeks (or 18 weeks for disabled children) for each child under the age of 5 (or 18 yrs if disabled.) This policy lays out the eligibility criteria and the obligations and restrictions placed on employees in exercising their rights to parental leave. A substantial amount of time off could cause considerable operational difficulties, so it is important to understand your obligations and any circumstances in which you can refuse a request. Also, as leave spans employers, it is important to know whether the employee has taken any of their entitlement with a previous employer.
In common with all policies, this policy should be signed by the most senior person responsible for its operation (normally the head of the Company) and all employees should be informed of its contents, with a central copy held on a 'Personnel Policy File' with all of your other policies and procedures. Once you have established this as Company Policy, please ensure you and your employees comply with it.
