Alcohol & Substance Abuse Policy and Procedure

This policy outlines how an employer should deal with an employee who is abusing either alcohol or other substances (including prescription drugs). It explains the circumstances in which an employer may seek to restrict an employee's activities outside of the workplace if they could impact on the health and safety of the individual and the rest of the workforce, and explains the circumstances in which an employer may wish to help the employee's rehabilitation. It also clearly defines both employee's and manager's responsibilities to enforce the policy in order to protect the workforce from the effects of abuse.

In common with all policies, this policy should be signed by the most senior person responsible for its operation (normally the head of the Company) and all employees should be informed of its contents, with a central copy held on a 'Personnel Policy File' with all of your other policies and procedures. Once you have established this as Company Policy, please ensure you and your employees comply with it.
