Flexible Retirement Policy and Procedure
This policy and procedure explains employees' legal entitlement to request to work beyond their usual retirement age.
Legally required letter advising employee of their forthcoming retirement & their statutory right to request an extension of employment
This letter advises an employee reaching retirement age of their legal right to request an extension of employment beyond their standard retirement date (usually 65yrs), and outlines the process they must follow in order to do so. The letter should be sent to employees between six and twelve months of their retirement date.
Letter advising of generic change to contractual terms concerning retirement
With effect from October 2006 employees became legally entitled to request an extension to their contractual retirement age. This letter advises employees of this right and makes clear that a request for such an extension can be refused.
Letter agreeing to a flexible retirement request - no meeting
This letter advises an employee who has requested to work beyond their standard retirement age (normally 65 yrs) that their request has been approved.
Letter arranging a meeting to discuss the employee's flexible retirement request
This letter invites an employee who has made a request to work beyond retirement age to a meeting to discuss the request.
Letter following meeting agreeing to a flexible retirement request
This letter advises an employee that, following a meeting, their flexible retirement request has been approved.
Letter refusing a flexible retirement request following meeting
This letter advises an employee who has made a flexible retirement request that, following a meeting to discuss the arrangement, they have not been succesful.
Letter following a rejection of a request inviting employee to an appeal hearing
This letter invites an employee whose flexible retirement request has been turned down to an appeal hearing.
Letter following an appeal agreeing to a flexible retirement request
This letter advises an employee that following an appeal against the rejection of their request to work beyond retirement age, their request has been approved.
Letter following an appeal refusing a flexible retirement request
This letter advises an employee that their appeal against the decision to refuse their flexible retirement request has not been successful.
