Put it out Wales! No Smoking!

26 Feb 2007

2nd April 2007 sees a Wales-wide ban on smoking in enclosed spaces. Wales will join Ireland and Scotland who have already received the instruction to quit, England completes the 'no smoking United Kingdom' in July. Media reports widely suggest that the Councils are preparing to actively police the ban and we advise our customers to comply rather than risk a fine and adverse publicity.

The ban applies to workplaces, work vehicles, pubs, restaurants, meeting rooms, halls....pretty much anywhere that can be classed as 'enclosed' i.e. a space that is 50% or less open to the elements. There are few exceptions to the laws, but those that are exempt will be:

  • Designated rooms in in adult residential care homes, adult hospices & residential mental health buildings
  • Designated bedrooms in hotels, boarding houses, inns, hostels etc where there is no door linking the designated bedroom to any other part of the premises.

Employers are required to enforce the ban in their own premises, display adequate signs and deal quickly and firmly with any transgressions.
